Learning Languages: Balancing Work, Family, and Anki Flashcards

As a busy father and husband, I find myself constantly yearning for more quality time with my wife amidst the demands of a full-time job and two energetic and vibrant young children. Despite the challenges, my passion for acquiring new linguistic skills never wanes. The lure of Japanese and Bulgarian languages beckons to me like an itch I can't ignore.

The journey of learning Japanese has been an exciting, albeit demanding, process. With so many resources available, finding the right tools and techniques that fit my hectic lifestyle has been crucial. From WaniKani to Duolingo, I've experimented with various methods, all while trying to juggle work and family life.

I have experimented with various methods, including apps like Duolingo, which gamifies language learning through bite-sized lessons and rewards. However, I have discovered that learning in context with resources like native texts, videos, and podcasts is more effective in grasping the nuances of the Japanese language.

Anki, a popular spaced-repetition flashcard app, has become my go-to resource for memorizing vocabulary and kanji. The app's intelligent algorithm ensures that I review words and characters just when I'm about to forget them, making the learning process more efficient, and since the words I'm adding are what I'm actually coming across with by trying to use the language, the words are tailored to what I'm interested in.

The downside, however, is that using Anki can sometimes feel like a chore, especially when I'm already pressed for time. As any parent can attest, finding the time to immerse oneself in a foreign language while juggling full-time work and family responsibilities is no easy feat. Between a full time career in web development, school runs, house chores, and the endless tasks that come with raising two young kids, it can be tough to dedicate the time and energy needed to truly progress in my Japanese studies.

The challenge of integrating Bulgarian into my routine is intensified by the fact that it is a Slavic language and relatively unfamiliar to me. Although I have friends from Bulgaria, I am not yet proficient enough to have a conversation with them in their native language. By applying the lessons I've learned from studying Japanese, such as learning in context and building themed study decks in Anki, I hope to have a basic conversation with them when I eventually visit Bulgaria.

Despite the challenges, I've discovered that the key to successful language learning lies in being creative and adaptable. Instead of adhering to a strict study schedule, I've learned to seize any opportunity to practice Japanese and Bulgarian, whether it's listening to a podcast during my morning commute, reading a short news article on my lunch break, or sneaking in a quick Anki review session while the kids are asleep.

As my language learning journey continues, I've come to understand the importance of re-evaluating my priorities and making adjustments as needed. While family and work will always come first, finding ways to integrate my passion for languages into my daily routine has become a personal mission.

Looking ahead, I'm eager to continue exploring new resources and techniques that cater to my unique learning needs and time constraints. This might involve setting more realistic language goals, seeking out opportunities to practice with native speakers, or even enrolling in an online course that offers greater flexibility.

Language learning is a journey that requires perseverance, adaptability, and the willingness to prioritize. Although progress may be slower than desired, celebrating small victories along the way is crucial. These moments serve as a reminder that despite the challenges of balancing work, family, and personal interests, the pursuit of knowledge and self-improvement is worth the effort.

My language learning adventure has been a beautiful reminder of the importance of pursuing our passions and interests, no matter how busy life may get. It has taught me the value of perseverance, adaptability, and the power of learning in context. The road ahead may be filled with challenges and obstacles, but with the right mindset and a willingness to prioritize my language learning, I know that I'll continue to grow, not only as a language learner, but also as a person.
